Case Studies: Complications

Each of these one-of-a-kind pieces has been designated a Complication as a result of being either a marvel of metalsmithing or containing a gemstone stone so rare it took scouring the planet to locate.

Brief

  • Yellow Gold

  • Gems

  • Client from Gobi Desert region in China so he wanted three elements from his home: Rainbow Mountains, Caves of Marango and Golden Poplar Trees

 

Concept

  • The openings of the caves and their asymmetry are reflected in the shape of the earrings

  • The colors of the sapphires drawn from the colors of the mountains themselves

  • The texture reflecting the desert floor

  • The rich color of the gold specifically mixed for the earrings to match the leaves of the trees.

Manufacturing Notes

  • The bezel for each sapphire was handmade using a unique blend of alloys to create a more flexible 18k gold wire

  • The texturing of the earrings was achieved by filing away the gold 

  • The patina of the gold was the result of brushing the gold as well as heating it.
