Case Studies: Complications

Each of these one-of-a-kind pieces has been designated a Complication as a result of being either a marvel of metalsmithing or containing a gemstone stone so rare it took scouring the planet to locate.

Complication One

Brief

  • Use diamonds from client's grandmother's necklace.

  • These were to be a gift to her future daughter-in-law who likes earrings that dangled

  • Clean lines and White Gold

  • Client asked that the Star of David with a diamond be made into a little pendant for a future grand daughter

  • Having only used 4 of the 13 diamonds from the necklace in these earrings I was also able to make the earrings in Case Study Six and the largest diamond was used to make a simple Bezel set pendant.

Grandmother’s necklace

In presenting these designs the client was being channeled by Goldilocks. She loved all three but felt the first was too fussy with three stones, the second was “too” simple with one stone and that the third was just perfect with two stones. I slightly lengthened the chain between the two diamonds to give the earrings some air and to create a more dramatic effect.

These earrings are entirely hand fabricated so there were no casts, mounds, or ready made components used in their manufacture.
