Case Studies: Complications

Each of these one-of-a-kind pieces has been designated a Complication as a result of being either a marvel of metalsmithing or containing a gemstone stone so rare it took scouring the planet to locate.

The Necklace

Being given free rein is both an exhilarating design experience and also one that is wrought with anxiety. With this particular piece the client was not shown or told anything about the necklace until it was delivered. This leaving me with the haunting voice in my head asking after each decision if I’ve made the right choice!

I decided to have this necklace be an exercise in purity! Making this piece coincided with the making of Complication Nine so I asked my gem dealer for a 2.5ct Natural Ceylon Royal Blue Sapphire. Next I contacted my Diamond broker and asked for a dozen D Color Flawless diamonds. With those in hand the next stop was my South Seas Pearl dealer where I picked up 3 feet (Yes, 3 feet) of Pearls that were semi-baroque Silver in color with under tones of cream and pink. With all of these gorgeous gems in my bag I then asked my manufacturer to make the final piece, the clasp, in Platinum.

The client was floored as she opened the presentation box and saw what was housed inside.
